Police board fires cop who lied about drunken suicide threat

At its meeting on Feb. 28, 2018, the Chicago Police Board voted to dismiss Officer Mazyar Hariri for drunkenly threatening to kill himself with a gun while off-duty, then lying about it to investigators.

According to police department charges, on the night of Feb. 10, 2015, Hariri stuck a pistol "into his mouth in the presence of one or more members of his family." Later, when given a breath-analysis test at a nearby hospital, Hariri had a blood-alcohol level of .103.

When asked about the incident by an internal affairs investigator in August, 2015, Hariri made "a false report," according to charges.

Police superintendent Eddie Johnson recommended in October, 2016 that Hariri be fired.

According to the Chicago Police Data Project, Hariri joined the department in April, 2004, and was most recently assigned to the South Side's 9th District.

Hariri and other officers received department commendations in February, 2016 for their actions in response to a North Side home invasion in 2014.
